Takeshi IZUMO

Civil state

·       Nationality : French

·       Birth place : Paris, France

Research interests

·       Physical oceanography/climate studies: interactions and coupling between ocean circulation variations and climate in the tropics, particularly the role of ocean circulation in regional climate/monsoon variabililty of the Indo-Pacific sector on intraseasonal to interannual timescales. Main goal: help to understand climate variations and improve their predictability, and to limit the impacts of climate warming.

Education background

·       2000-2003:

Ph.D. at university Toulouse III (Paul Sabatier) in the oceanographic laboratory LEGOS (Laboratoire d’Etudes en Géophysique et Océnographie spatiales).

Subject of the Ph.D. defended and passed with honours in December 2003 at LEGOS: The equatorial undercurrent and the associated mass and heat exchanges in the tropical Pacific : variability, links with El Niño-La Niña events.

PhD advisor: Joël PICAUT

During this 3 years period, different kind of formations about pedagogy, psychology, communication, first help actions and other various cultural and scientific subjects, requested for teaching activity.

·       1999-2000 :

DEA (Diplôme d’Etudes Avancées, diploma of advanced studies, French equivalent to Master’s degree) in Ocean, Atmosphere and Environmental sciences, with a specialization in ocean and atmosphere dynamics, at Toulouse University III (Paul Sabatier), passed with distinction “très bien” (very good, rank: 1 of 18)).

Magistère of physics at Lyon university I (Claude Bernard), passed with distinction “assez bien” (quite good).

·       1998-1999 :

Competition (the « concours de l’Agrégation » in physics) successfully passed (rank: 21 of ~2500) to have a secure position to give physics (and chemistry) courses at high school and first years of university in France.

Preparation (one year) done at the ENS (Ecole Normale Supérieure, part of the “Grandes écoles” French university system) in Lyon (France).

·       1997- 1998 :

Maitrise (equivalent of Bachelor’s degree) in physics at the ENS Lyon, with a geophysics option.

·       1996- 1997 :

Licence in physics at ENS Lyon

·       1994- 1996 :

Preparation (two years equivalent to the first two years of university) of the competition to enter the “Grandes écoles” at Hoche high school in Versailles, leading to an admission at ENS Lyon (rank: 63 over ~3000).

·       1993- 1994 :

High school final degree, with a scientific specialization and with German, English and Japanese as studied languages.

Work experience

·       2020-present: Research at EIO (Ecosystemes Insulaires Oceaniens; University of French Polynesia) as an IRD researcher.

·       2012-2020: Research at LOCEAN (Paris) as an IRD researcher, and visiting scientist at NIO (National Institute of Oceanography; India) from 2015 to 2019.

·       2009-2012: Research at the University of Tokyo as a project associate researcher.

·       August-September 2002:

Oceanographic campaign of 31 days in the tropical Pacific on the R/V Kai’imimoana for monitoring, repairing and replacing TAO (Tropical Atmosphere Ocean array of buoys) moorings along 170°W departing from Honolulu, Hawaii.

·       February-June 2000 :

Training period (5 months) in physical oceanography at LEGOS in Toulouse :Transfer of water masses in the tropical Pacific during the El Niño and La Niña events of 1997-1998.
